Can Developmental Biology Inspire Amorphous Computing?

چکیده

Systems constructed from vast numbers of tiny processors / sensors, connected together in a nonprescribed way, form the basis of novel computing paradigms such as amorphous computing, ubiquitous computing and pervasive computing. Within these systems, the individual computational units may be fragile, unpredictable and only able to communicate locally. However, despite these individual restrictions, they still need to be able to self-organise to robustly and efficiently carry out a set of collective functions. By looking at the development of multicellular organisms, this paper examines how the challenges faced by these amorphous systems are similar to those faced by, and solved by, biological systems. We also examine the properties of developing systems that may be useful for amorphous computing; such as self-organisation, robustness and scalability.

Establishing a new animal model for muscle regeneration studies

Skeletal muscle injuries are one of the most common problems in the worldwide which impose a substantial financial burden to the health care system.  Accordingly, it widely accepted that muscle regeneration is a promising approach that can be used to treat muscle injury patients. However, the underlying mechanisms of muscle regeneration have yet to be elucidated. The muscle structure and muscle...

Morphogenesis on an Amorphous Computer

Embryological development is a magnificent demonstration of how complexity can arise from initial simplicity. A single egg cell contains most of the information needed to position the millions of cells in a human body; moreover, the construction process is remarkably robust in that it can recover from a large number of cell deaths and malfunctions. Our goal is to understand the major principles...

Social insects inspire human design.

The international conference 'Social Biomimicry: Insect Societies and Human Design', hosted by Arizona State University, USA, 18-20 February 2010, explored how the collective behaviour and nest architecture of social insects can inspire innovative and effective solutions to human design challenges. It brought together biologists, designers, engineers, computer scientists, architects and busines...

Amorphous Phase Mediated Crystallization: Fundamentals of Biomineralization

Many biomineralization systems start from transient amorphous precursor phases, but the exact crystallization pathways and mechanisms remain largely unknown. The study of a well-defined biomimetic crystallization system is key for elucidating the possible mechanisms of biomineralization and monitoring the detailed crystallization pathways. In this review, we focus on amorphous phase mediated cr...

Evo-Devo of amniote integuments and appendages.

Integuments form the boundary between an organism and the environment. The evolution of novel developmental mechanisms in integuments and appendages allows animals to live in diverse ecological environments. Here we focus on amniotes. The major achievement for reptile skin is an adaptation to the land with the formation of a successful barrier. The stratum corneum enables this barrier to preven...
